Should you forgo shaving if you have acne?

You already know that shaving over pimples can aggravate acne if you've ever tried to do so and ended up with cuts or inflamed skin. However, just because you have a breakout doesn't mean you should forgo shaving.

How to shave with acne?

First and foremost, it's important to remember that shaving should be avoided if you have painful or inflammatory cystic acne, or at the very least, you should consult a dermatologist first. However, you can still shave if you have a small to severe outbreak or acne. All you'll need are the appropriate methods and tools.

Before you start, you'll need the following:

1. A razor good enough for the sensitive skin

2. Anti-acne shaving cream

3. Exfoliating cleanser

As you shave

Apply a thin, even coating of shaving cream or gel. Use shaving cream or gel made specifically for skin prone to acne whenever possible. These will have mild, non-irritating chemicals, and they might also contain substances that treat acne.

The best razor to use is single-edge razor, it prevents hair ingrown and irritation. Before using the razor, make sure it is clean.

Shave in the direction that feels most natural and comfortable to you. You'll unavoidably be shaving against the grain because facial hair doesn't all grow in the same direction, but that's okay.

What about acne-prone skin?

If you have oily, acne-prone skin but no active breakouts, you might want to use a shaving brush to lather the shaving cream. This will enable the hair to stand up straight so that it may be cut bluntly across rather than at an angle, which can irritate the skin and result in ingrown hairs. However, those who get breakouts may find shaving brushes annoying.
